SIOUX CITY | Joseph A. "Joe" Woodward, 86, of Sioux City, passed away Monday, Jan. 9, 2017, at a Sioux City hospital, after a brief illness.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Meyer Brothers Morningside Chapel. Burial will be at a later date in Grant Township Cemetery in Ticonic, Iowa. Visitation will be one hour prior to services Saturday at the funeral home.

Joseph Allison Woodward was born May 27, 1930, in Ticonic., one of nine children born to Russell D. and Blanche (Beers) Woodward. He graduated in 1948 from Maple Valley High School in Mapleton, Iowa. Joe enlisted in the U.S. Marines, serving from 1951 to 1954. He served during the Korean War as a radio operator stationed on the island of Cheju-Do. Joe then attended Morningside College, graduating in June 1960.

Joe married June Watson May 20, 1951, in Ticonic. Joe and June moved to Sioux City in September 1956. They had eight children. Their children were raised in Sioux City, all graduating from East High School.

He made a career as an insurance adjuster, retiring in 1990 from Farm Bureau Insurance Co.

Joe enjoyed golfing, reading, playing Suduko and watching sports on TV. Most of all, he loved spending time with his kids and grandkids. He looked forward to traveling and summer vacations with his family, getting "out and about" with no specific destination but to see what was going on. He was known for doing yard work in sleeveless shirts.

He was a self-taught banjo player, receiving his first banjo from his uncle Albert at age 9. He purchased his second banjo from the Sears catalog at age 12.

Survivors include his wife, June of Sioux City; children, Denise (Denny) Pyzel of Hawarden, Iowa, Craig Woodward (girlfriend Lisa) of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Corey Woodward, Rhonda (Randy) Facile of Manning, Iowa, Roxanne (Ron) Hartnett of Dakota City and Lana (Pat) Keleher of Sioux City; 15 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Don (Sue) Woodward of Ticonic and Jerry (Jean) Woodward of Wichita, Kan.; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Ron and Chuck Woodward; two grandsons, Jason Woodward and Jack Keleher; a sister, Marilyn; and five brothers, Mel, Everett, Lyle, Rollie and Elwin B.
