Bette Koenigs, age 92, of Mapleton, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, January 1, 2017 at Maple Heights Nursing Home of Mapleton, Iowa.

A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, January 7, 2017 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Mapleton, Iowa. Father Dan Greving will officiate; with interment following in the St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery of Mapleton, Iowa. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., with a Rosary Service held at 5:00 p.m. and a Vigil Service held at 7:00 p.m., on Friday, January 6, 2017 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Mapleton, Iowa. The Armstrong - Van Houten Funeral Home of Mapleton, Iowa is in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Bette Koenigs, the daughter of Louis and Lillian (Hartleben) Otto, was born on June 9, 1924, on the family farm east of Mapleton, Iowa.

She attended rural country school and graduated at the age of 16 from Danbury High School with the class of 1940. After graduation, Bette worked at the rationing office in Mapleton, Iowa, during WWII.

Bette was united in marriage to Paul “Pirk” Koenigs on February 26, 1946, in Mapleton, Iowa. The couple made their home on the family farm east of Mapleton. Bette and Pirk were blessed with four children: twin sons, David and Donald, son, Jerrald, and daughter, Marla.

Bette was a homemaker, farmer’s wife, and mother. She worked for Kraft Clothing Company in Mapleton for 25 years. Bette will be remembered as a devoted wife, loving mother and grandmother. She was a wonderful cook, especially her warm chocolate chip cookies, delectable apple pies, and baking cut-out birthday cakes for her grandchildren. Most of all Bette treasured spending time with her family. They were her world and she will be greatly missed by all.

Bette enjoyed crossword puzzles, Scrabble, playing cards, walking, delivering meals on wheels to local residents, a glass of Hi-C and toast with her grandchildren, a nice warm cup of tea with her ladies group, and crocheting afghans for family and friends.

Bette was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church of Mapleton, Iowa, singing in the choir and serving on the Ladies guild. She was also a member of the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary.

Left to cherish her memory are her children: David (Kathlene) Koenigs of Mapleton, Iowa, Donald (Sheryl) Koenigs of Brandon, South Dakota, Jerrald (Carol) Koenigs of Mapleton, Iowa, and Marla (Jack) Seuntjens of Mapleton, Iowa; fourteen grandchildren, twenty-six great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Lorraine Koenigs of Pella, Iowa; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Bette was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Paul “Pirk” Koenigs; and two sisters, Lela and Lola
