SLOAN, Iowa | Helen M. Dean, 90, of Sloan passed away peacefully Saturday, July 16, 2016, at Burgess Health Center in Onawa, Iowa.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Community Church of Christ in Sloan, with Dr. Emery Killian officiating. Burial will be prior to the service in Hite Cemetery, Whiting, Iowa. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.

Helen Mae was born on June 15, 1926, in Redding, Calif., the daughter of John Michael and Amanda Eunice (Roberts) Fitzgerald. She graduated from Shelton High School in Shelton, Neb., and continued as a teacher in Nebraska until her marriage in 1945.

Helen and Denman F. Dean were united in marriage on Oct. 1, 1945, in Elk Point, S.D. The couple moved and started farming in the Whiting area in 1946. On Nov. 27, 1958, the couple moved to Sloan and continued farming. They moved into their Sloan apartment in 1996. Denman preceded her in death on Feb. 1, 1998.

In addition to raising their children, she was dedicated to serving her community through the church, American Legion Auxiliary and 4-H, all while working at the grocery store and then owner/operator of the Sloan Cafe.

Survivors include her three sons, James of Whiting, Mike of Salix, Iowa, and Greg and his wife, Gwyn of Council Bluffs, Iowa; three daughters and their husbands, Bev and Ronnie Copple of Salix, Chris and Mike Williams of Runnels, Iowa, and Denise and Bob Lestor of Sun City West, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; an infant daughter, Carol Sue; one grandchild; her brothers and sisters-in-law, Ervin and Helen Dean and Opal and Darrel Deen, and Alta and Wes Kensinger and Nora Waite.

We would like to thank the staff at Maple Heights Nursing Home for the wonderful care they gave our mother. In addition, a sincere thanks to the staff at Burgess Health Center for the loving care they provided to mom and our family this past week.

Memorials can be made in Helen's name to Community Church of Christ in Sloan, the Iowa American Legion Auxiliary, or the Iowa 4-H Foundation.
