Harold Magnus Sorenson, 96, passed quietly away on Sunday, March 9, 2008, with his family at his bedside, at the Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa.

Harold was born in Blencoe, Iowa on September 17, 1911. He was the third child of eleven born to George Magnus Sorenson and Laura Lavrina Larson, nine sons and two daughters.

The family moved to an area north of Miller in Hand County, South Dakota, when Harold was about eight years old. He worked as a farm hand and acquired a Iove for horses. He returned to Pisgah, Iowa as a young man and continued to work on farms until he was able to buy his own.

He met Luea Elizabeth Hime of Blencoe, daughter of Wilbur Hime and Bertha Marley. They married on May 10, 1935 at Glenwood, Iowa. To this union were born four children, Darrell Lee, Sharon Dee, Dennis Leroy and Thomas Gordon.

Harold and Luea farmed in the Onawa, Monona County area for over seventy years and along the way he became a rodeo performer and trainer of cutting horses. He was instrumental in the creation and organizing of a Little Britches Rodeo group at Whiting, Iowa.

Harold enjoyed coming to town to have coffee with his friends and was an avid storyteller and could keep them coming for hours. He was a real cowboy that could talk about horses, rodeos, farming, or tractors and he liked playing cards and watching 'classic' boxing matches.

Harold is survived by son, Darrell and Fern of Onawa, daughter, Sharon and Dennis Colman of Washington, Iowa, son, Tom of Onawa, eight grandchildren: Michelle, Michael and wife Carolyn, Ryan and wife Irma, Chris, David, Ashley, Cory and wife Jennifer, Angie, nine great grandchildren: Skyler, Steven, Stacia, Natalisse, Janilisse, David (DJ), Michael, Grace and Michael; two brothers, Eddie and wife Kathleen of Texas, Delmer and wife Faye of South Dakota, and one sister, Joy Downey of Linden, Iowa, as well as many nieces and nephews and oh so many friends, along with his dog Waco.

He is preceded by parents, his wife of sixty-seven years, Luea, his son, Dennis, a daughter-in-law, Jan, one grandson, Jared, one great granddaughter, Jennifer, six brothers, Walter, Donald, Leonard, Maurice, Bernard, Elmer an one sister, Arlet.

A memorial service was held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 12 2008 at Rush family Chapel with Pastor Steven Hetzel officiating. Burial was in Harrison Cemetery at Whiting, Iowa.

Memorials may be directed to the Whiting Rodeo Association.
