Noted Onawa Attorney Dies

J.A. Prichard, Spanish War Vet, Succumbs to Long Illness

Onawa, Iowa- Special: J.A. Prichard, 75, veteran Onawa attorney and widely known in western Iowa as a criminal lawyer, died at his home here Tuesday following an illness of several months.

Mr. Prichard has been practicing law here more than 40 years, having come here shortly after he was admitted to the Iowa bar in 1889. He was born at Manteno, Iowa, December 13, 1861, and was graduated from Cornell College in 1858 and from the University of Iowa, with an LL.B. degree, in 1889, the year he was admitted to the bar.

He served as city attorney of Onawa from 1916 to 1920 and from 1928 until his death. He was a veteran of the Spanish American war and a member of the Monona County and American Bar Associations.

A small farm at Blue Lake near here was one of Mr. Prichard’s hobbies. He raised many water-melons on his farm, and he gave them away to boys for the asking. He was intensely interested in sports as well as the activities of boys.

Mr. Prichard was the father of a family devoted to law and military activities. All of his four sons are attorneys and are connected in some way with military organizations. The sons are Lieut. Col. Vernon Prichard, Honolulu, on the staff of the United States army; George W. Prichard and Albert Prichard, who were associated with their father in the practice of law here, and who are captains in the army reserve corps and Leslie, Dallas, Texas, who is a captain in the Texas National Guard.

In addition to his four sons, Mr. Prichard is survived by his widow. Funeral arrangements are pending.
