Neil H. Leapley, 86, of Onawa, Iowa, died Thursday, July 28, 2016 at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, August 2, 2016 at the First Christian Church in Onawa, Iowa, led by Jack Gibler. Burial will follow in the Onawa Cemetery with Military Honors provided by the David McNeill American Legion Post #129 of Onawa. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.

Neil Herbert was born November 22, 1929 in Laurel, Nebraska, the son of Floyd "Herb" and Alice (Ross) Leapley. He graduated from Central High School in Sioux City, Iowa in 1948. Following graduation, he joined the United States Army and served until his honorable discharge on June 20, 1952.

Neil and Lois Brenden were united in marriage on June 2, 1957 in Albaton, Iowa. To this union three children were born. Lois preceded him in death on March 5, 2013.

He worked for the Iowa Department of Transportation until his retirement. He was a carpenter at heart.

He served on the city council and as mayor of Onawa, Iowa for many years. He was a member of the Vesper Lodge #223 AF & AM and the David McNeill American Legion Post #129, both of Onawa. He was also a member of the First Christian Church in Onawa.

Survivors include three children, Gary (Julie) Leapley of Gretna, NE, Lisa (Terry) Tanner of Erie, IL, and Chris (Carissa) Leapley of Onawa, IA; five grandchildren, Allison (Paul) Bennett of Seattle, WA, Rachel Leapley of Omaha, NE, Lauren Leapley of Gretna, NE, Tyler Leapley of Onawa, IA, and Evan Leapley of Onawa, IA; one great-grandson, William "Tripp" Bennett III; five sisters-in-law, Ardis (Bert) McCandless of Whiting, IA, Donna Williams of Sloan, IA, Doris Nelson of Sloan, IA, and Nancy Brenden and Joanne Brenden, both of Whiting, IA.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Herb and Alice Leapley; wife, Lois Leapley; a grandson, Tony Brockway; and three brothers-in-law, Arnold Brenden, Gale Brenden, and Barney Nelson.
