James J. Fymbo 1909 - 1986

James J. Fymbo, the son of Martin and Gertrude A. Baker Fymbo, was born May 18, 1909, on a farm near Turin. He died at Myrtue Memorial Hospital in Harlan on May 26, 1986, just eight days after his 77th birthday. As a young boy, he attended school in Onawa, where he graduated in the class of 1927. While in high school, he also played football for four years.

On June 18, 1927, he entered the U.S. Navy, where he served the first 11 years as an engineer on the Battleship Nevada. During those 11 years he also played football for the Navy. He then served on several different ships during WW II as the Chief Engineer. ON June 18, 1947, he was Honorably Discharged. He then returned to Iowa, where he made his home in Harlan, and worked at the Chicken Hut. On January 28, 1952, he was called back to active duty in the U.S. Navy. He served his country during this period of service as an instructor at the U.S. Navy Training Center at Great Lakes, Illinois. After his honorable discharge from the Navy on June 21, 1953, he returned to Harlan and worked as a bartender.

On February 6, 1961, he married Nettie Belle Densmore Beauchamp at Avoca. Since they were married, they have made their home in Harland. Timber was a member of the V.F.W. Post 941 of Harlan.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Goldie. He is survived by his wife, Nettie Belle of Harlan; three stepchildren; Robert Beauchamp of Reno, Nev.; William Beauchamp of Reno, Ne.; and Sanda (Mrs. Gus) Sindt of Harlan; seven grandchildren; two sisters’ Marie Parent of Harlan and Mabel (Mrs. Ray) Barnett of Harlan; nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held May 29, 1986, at Pauley Funeral Home in Harlan with Pastor Otto Zwanziger of the Immanuel Lutheran Church officiating. Burial was in Harlan Cemetery, Harlan, with Joe Molony, Keith Allen, Roger Schmitz, Verner Schmitz, Ralph Ferguson, Paul P. Stephany and Marion Scroggin serving as honorary casket-bearers, Dan Bicker, Jim Sander, Jim Hansen, Ron Ellsworth, LaVern Koppold and Harold Blackwell served as casket-bearers.

Pauley Funeral Hope was in charge of arrangements.
