Former Business Man Laid to Rest

George A. King was born August 17, 1893 at Wisner, Nebraska, a son of Bernard and Anna King and passed from this life at the Elmwood home in Onawa on Wednesday, August 19 at the age of 71 years and two days.

He had been a resident at Elmwood since October of 1962. Mr. King attended Mechanics Trade School in Omaha and started trucking in 1923 where he hauled gravel, grain and stock.

Later he bought and sold salvage. He started operating the King Freight Line in 1931 between Onawa, Omaha and Sioux City. The business continues to operate by the family and is holder of the oldest permits for freight hauling in western Iowa. Mr. King retired in 1961.

He was united in marriage to Pearl Irene Larsen on July 3, 1918 at Blair, Nebraska. Mrs. King died January 18, 1951.

Early in life he was baptized in the Methodist Church in Nebraska. He was a charter member of the Eagles Lodge of Onawa.

Survivors include seven daughters, (Lucille) Mrs. Frank Walden of Happy Camp, California, (Dorothy) Mrs. Earl Klingensmith of Las Vegas, Nev., (Mona) Mrs. W.C. Burks of Ogden, Utah, (Isabel) Mrs. Larry Maxon of Corning, California, (Iris) Mrs. Harold Kuehl of Happy Camp, California, (Jacqueline) Mrs. Wilford Rawlings of Onawa and (Carolyn) Mrs. Edwin Harmon of Phoenix, Arizona; four sons, George B. of Onawa, Lyle M. of Omaha, Lynn L. of Council Bluffs and Richard E. of Columbus, Nebraska; 34 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Lillie Mencke of Blair, Nebraska; two brothers, Walter and Thomas of Oregon.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Lila Mae and six grandchildren.

The funeral service was held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 22, at the Methodist Church here. Rev. E.E. Pencock officiated. Mrs. Robert Johnson, Dennis and Rikki Johnson sang “Softly and Tenderly” and “In The Garden,” accompanied at the organ by Mrs. Oliver Kelley.

Casket bearers were Dan Benjamin, James Funkhouser, Ben Jensen, Sabin Smith, Harry Pitts and Don Phipps. Interment was in the Onawa Cemetery with arrangements by the Pearson Funeral Home.
