Ellen, the second of 5 daughters, was born on October 23, 1924 in Whiting to Clarence Samual and Myrna (Law) Hale. She attended school in Whiting, graduating with the class of 1942.

Ellen worked in the Whiting Post Office for three years after high school. During this time she met the love of her life, George E. MacClure from Sloan, Iowa. They were married July 29, 1945 in Niagara Falls, NY. During their 46-year marriage, they had many adventures. They lived in New York, South Dakota, North Dakota, and California following George's work building dams. They raised their three children on a farm in Albaton near Sloan, IA. While on the farm, Ellen displayed her many homemaking skills. She was a talented seamstress and cook. She canned and froze food in the summer, and she enjoyed being outdoors working in her flower garden. She loved being a homemaker and her husband's partner on the family farm. Ellen and George lived in New Mexico for more than 10 years, mining for gold before his passing in 1991. Ellen returned to Whiting in 1993. In later years, she enjoyed challenging herself with new experiences, exploring her creative interests through knitting, crocheting, painting, quilting, and ceramics. Many friends and relatives were the recipients of her talents.

Ellen was a life-long member of the Whiting Christian Church. She loved her church family. Each Sunday before church began, she would shake hands and warmly welcome attendees old and new. If someone was absent, she would often send them a church bulletin. Ellen seldom missed a service, and she enjoyed participating in the church's various study groups and ministry activities.

Ellen maintained a very positive attitude and voice of encouragement to many throughout her life. Her grit, perseverance, and spirit of adventure fueled her daily living. Due to her faith, she was prepared for her passing. Her friends and family are thankful that she was able to maintain her independence up until the end of her ninety-first year of life.

She is survived by her children, Anne (Don) Hanisch of Sloan, IA, Robert (Carol) MacClure of Whiting, IA, and Mildred (Russ) Overaas of Lesuer, MN; six grandchildren, DeAnn Hanisch of Bennington, NE, Brant (Heidi) Hanisch of Shenandoah, IA, Adam (Vonda) MacClure of Sloan, Kelly (Toby) Baird on Pleasanton, CA, Kirk (Maggie) Overaas of Sioux Falls, SD, and Jenny (Shawn) Burtis of Minneapolis, MN; seven great-grandchildren, Miles, Henry, Jack, and Blythe Hanisch, Nathanial MacClure, Riley Baird, and Kate Overaas; one sister, Nancy Brenden of Whiting, IA; and one brother-in-law, Rod Holloway of Urbandale, IA.
