Monona County Democrat
23 February 1893

On Sunday morning, February 19th, 1893, at 6 o’clock, Carl Jacobson died at the home of his parents in this city. He was taken sick the evenings of the 2d with severe pains in his stomach and bowels. The family physician, Dr. Harmon, was called, but was unable to give relief except through the influence of opiates. After several days it became evident that there was an almost complete stopping of the bowels and that the only chance to save the patient, who had already grown very weak, was to perform an operation. This was done on Friday evening, the 10th, by Dr. Harmon and Evans. The operation relieved the sufferer from an internal tumor which had formed into a large bag of pus. The patient, though very low at the time the operation was made, rallied and grew much stranger and become cheerful. There is scarcely a doubt but that the operation would have proven a success only for a second hemorrhage which began Friday, eight days after the operation. From this, the patient continued to grow worst until Sunday morning, when the spirit of the noble boy departed.

Carl was born August 18th, 1877, in Sweden when but a small child his parents came to this country, and have for several years lived in this city. Carl for nearly two years had been employed in the Democrat office and no boy ever entered an office that worked more honestly in the interest of his employer than did Carl. Since last August, he had lived in our home, receiving much the same treatment and care as our own. In his death we feel a sorrow only second to that of his grief stricken parents and little brothers and sisters.

The funeral services were conducted by Rev. F.A. Morrow and the Onawa Order of Good Templars, of which he was a member. The Order gathered at the family residence and led the funeral train to the M.E. church, where Rev. Morrow delivered a sermon full of hope and comfort. At the cemetery the service was concluded by the burial ritual of the Order of Good Templars.

Mr. and Mrs. Jacobson and the little brothers And sisters have the sympathy of many friends in their sad bereavement, but in all their sorrow, their faith is of that hopeful kind that gives them a view and assurance of an eternity of bliss and a re-union with Carl that shall be never ending.
