Obituary Of C. W. Neal

Charles William Neal, eldest son of Charles P. and Mary Neal, was born at Bedford, Iowa, January 21, 1883, and passed from this life in the Onawa hospital on September 8, 1958. Death came following a short illness. He moved with his parents to Moorhead when a small child. Early in life he accepted the Christ as his Savior and was baptized in the old church in Moorhead in 1894. He was always an active member of the Church of Christ. He had served as an elder of the church for 52 years.

In 1922 he moved his membership to the First Christian Church of Onawa. He was united in marriage with Edith Winegar on May 6, 1903. She preceded him in death in Omaha on January 3, 1939.

To this union was born four children: Helen (Mrs. Ed) Reynolds of Onawa, Dorothy (Mrs. Caroll) Hobson of Atkins, Iowa, Eloise (Mrs. J. L.) Hutchinson of Richland, Wash., and Merrill W. Neal, now deceased. Mr. Neal farmed in Monona County until 1923, when he moved to Onawa. He was deputy sheriff for four years and then served as sheriff of Monona County for 12 years. He also served in the Onawa School as janitor for two years, as clerk of the food stamp office for two years, and clerk of the employment office for six years. He was united in marriage with I Effie Skidmore in August, 1945. She died on January 7, 1946. On September 12, 1948, he was united in marriage with Clara Dunn of Missouri Valley. After an extended trip north and west, they resided in Missouri Valley for two years, then on an acreage near Modale until June of this year, at which time they moved to Mondamin.

He leaves to mourn his passing his wife, Clara; three daughters and three brothers, John, Fern and Loys Neal, all of Moorhead; a sister, Mrs. Lulu Kelley of Des Moines; and one foster brother, Frank Messenger of Moorhead. There are 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, three stepchildren: Donna (Mrs. Edgar) Thogersen of Onawa, Edwin J. Dunn of San Francisco, Calif., and Dr. Guy F. Dunn of Denver, Colo.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, Sept. 11, at 2:00 p.m. at the Church of Christ, Missouri Valley, with Rev. Everett Epperson and Rev. Albert Delbridge officiating. Mrs. Dorothy Ferris gave comfort in song, accompanied by Mrs. Byron Clark.

Pallbearers were Bill Reynolds, Dick Reynolds, Steve Reynolds, Jim Hobson, Leonard Miller and John Schallou.

Honorary bearers were Walter Axtell, Charley Clark, Vernon Spiker, Roy Spires, Byron Clark and William Hatcher. Burial was in the Moorhead cemetery under the direction of the Hennessey and Van Cleave Funeral Home of Missouri Valley.
