Mapleton, Iowa - Dorothea C. Bochmann, 78, of Mapleton, Iowa died Friday, February 5, 2016, at Burgess Care Center in Onawa, Iowa. The funeral service will be Thursday, February 11, 2016 at 2:30 p.m. at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Mapleton, Iowa with Pastor Marcus Manley officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church. Armstrong Funeral Home of Mapleton is in charge of the arrangements.

Dorothea Carrie Bochmann was born January 8, 1938, at Crystal Lake, Iowa, the daughter of Walter and Sarah (Bulten) Backer. She moved with her family to Mapleton, Iowa and graduated from Mapleton High School in 1957.

On August 29, 1958, Dorothea married Harold Bochmann at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Mapleton. The couple made their home and raised their four children in Mapleton. Her son, Harold Gene Bochmann, Jr., passed away March 13, 2015 and her husband, Harold Gene Bochmann, Sr., passed away August 25, 2015.

Along with caring for the family, Dorothea worked at multiple businesses in the area. These included the Mapleton Bowling Alley, the Mapleton Dime Store, the Home Cafe, the Ute restaurant, and Bell’s Convenience Store.

She was a member of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Mapleton where she was active with the Lutheran Ladies projects. She also volunteered with the American Red Cross and traveled to locations in disaster to assist victims.

Those family members surviving Dorothea are SallyJo Ross of Sioux City, Iowa, Vernie Bochmann of Mapleton, Iowa, and Dallas Swalve and her husband, John of Cylinder, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren and one on the way; two sisters, Maxine Mullicane of Anthon, Iowa and Roxann Devlin of Montana; and two brothers, Ernest Backer of Oregon and David Backer and his wife, Janet of California.

Along with her son and husband, Dorothea was preceded in death by her parents; and one brother, Jack Backer and one sister, Nancy Noerenberg.
