Loren W. Blakely, 84, of Hornick, Iowa died Wednesday, February 3, 2016 at Pleasant View Care Center, Whiting, Iowa, following a brief illness.

Funeral services will be 1:30 P.M. Saturday, February 6, 2016 at the Ticonic United Methodist Church, Ticonic, Iowa with Reverend Jena Manchester, officiating. Burial will be in Grant Township Cemetery, rural Rodney, Iowa with military honors provided by Hindman Steele American Legion Post #492 of Hornick, IA. Visitation will be 4:30 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. on Friday, February 5, 2016 at the Rush Family Chapel in Onawa, Iowa with a prayer service at 6:00 P.M. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service, Onawa, Iowa.

Loren Wilbur was born May 16, 1931 in Grant Center, Iowa the son of Ivan and Ida Ruth (Bentley) Blakely. Loren graduated from Mapleton High School, Mapleton, Iowa with the class of 1949.

Loren and Helen Fern Kline were united in marriage on April 17, 1955 in Lacon, Illinois. Three children were born to this union, Lori, Jeffrey, and Sheila. Loren served in the United States Army during the Korean War.

Loren farmed his two century family farms side by side with his wife until retiring in 1998. Many enjoyable memories on the farm included: the fellowship of family while eating meals together at home and tailgating in the fields. After retiring from farming, Loren and Helen enjoyed traveling to see friends and family around the country. He enjoyed playing cards and cribbage with his kids and grandchildren. He was a voracious reader, with two to four books a week. He and his wife enjoyed square dancing for many years.

Loren was a lifelong member of the Ticonic United Methodist Church, where he held various offices over the years. He was also a member of the Hindman Steele American Legion Post #492 of Hornick, Iowa. He served on the Monona County Extension Council, Maple Valley School Board, Grant Township, ASC Committee, Nagel Drainage District, Trustee of Grant Township, and the Area Twelve Education Association.

He is survived by his wife of sixty and one half years, Helen Blakely of Hornick, IA; daughter, Lori Kuhn and her husband Ronald of Omaha, NE; son, Jeffery and his wife Noi of Urbandale, IA; daughter, Sheila Baker and her husband Kirk of Hornick, IA; nine grandchildren, Scott (Amy) Kuhn of Denver, CO, Lisa (Scott) Albrecht of Thurston, NE, Steven (Chelsea) Kuhn of Lincoln, NE, Ladd (Carolyn) Blakely of Denver, CO, Alison Blakely of New York City, NY, Note (Liz) Thanupakorn of Urbandale, IA, Art Thanupakorn of Tampa, FL, Stephanie (Andy) Scott of Spencer, IA, and Abbey (fiancé Brock Benson) Baker of Omaha, NE; seven great-grandchildren; one sister, Betty Boles of Glenwood, IA; as well as many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ivan and Ida Ruth (Bentley) Blakely; one brother, Cecil Ivan Blakely; and one sister, Jeannette McCleerey.

Memorials in Loren's memory may be directed to the Onawa Public Library for new book purchases, or the Smithland or Hornick Fire and Rescue Departments.
