Jack William Sanford, 87, of Carroll, passed away on Friday, Feb. 5, at Hawkeye Care Center in Carroll.

Born on March 5, 1928, near Mapleton, he was the son of William and Anna (O’Leary) Sanford. He grew up on the family farm and graduated from Mapleton High School in 1946.

Jack worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company until 1950 when he was drafted into the United States Army to fight in the Korean War. He was shipped to Sapporo, Japan, with the Signal Company, 45th Division. He then landed south of the 38th parallel in Korea, where he was responsible for repairing communication lines damaged by enemy fire.

Jack was honorably discharged in 1953 and returned to Iowa to continue his work with the phone company. He was married to Janet Lee on July 17, 1957, in Spencer, followed by a honeymoon in Okoboji. The couple eventually settled in Carroll, where Jack built his career at Northwestern Bell and retired after more than 40 years of service.

Jack was active with the New Pioneers and the Carroll American Legion. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Carroll.

Jack is survived by his wife, Janet, of 59 years; son, Jason Sanford of Davenport; daughter, Joey Ravenscroft (Scott) of Minneapolis, Minn.; four grandchildren, Ben and Quinn Sanford of Davenport and Piper and Simon Ravenscroft of Minneapolis, Minn.; sister, Donna Ganzhorn of Mapleton; and several nieces and nephews.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Louise Miller, Betty Conger, and Phyllis Wade.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 13, at First United Methodist Church in Carroll with Rev. Denis Bailey officiating.

Visitation will be held at the church for one hour prior to the service.

Organist for the service will be Nancy Davis.

Military honors will be conducted at the church by the Carroll American Legion.

A graveside service will be held at a later date at in Mapleton with full military honors.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll.
