John N. Hendricks, 83 years old, passed away peacefully, Saturday, February 6, 2016 at Burgess Health Center, Onawa, Iowa after a life of travel and learning.

A visitation celebrating John's life will be 2:00 P.M. to 4:00 P.M. Wednesday, February 10, 2016 at the Rush Family Chapel in Onawa, Iowa. Burial will be in the Onawa Cemetery in the spring time with military honors provided by the United States Navy. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service, Onawa, Iowa.

John Neil was born May 6, 1932 in Blencoe, Iowa the son of John K. and Helen M. (Stanton) Hendricks.

After his high school graduation, John joined the Navy. Finishing one commitment, he reenlisted, became an officer, completed an electrical engineering degree at Nebraska, served in Korea and Vietnam. John completed training and certification from the Nuclear Power School. Due to the service, he moved to various locations throughout the world and throughout the United States. John served on several ships including the USS Harkness, USS Mansfield, and the USS Haven.

After leaving the service, he developed a backpack radio for the military and taught its usage in Pakistan near the Khyber Pass. Always learning from the various situations and people whom he met, his understanding of people expanded with his experience.

It wasn't until he retired and returned to Onawa, he said, that he was able to appreciate the beauty of the Loess hills and the farmlands adjacent to them. He said that the blue skies, small white clouds and green fields brought him quiet pleasure. He became a Master Gardner and wrote a gardening column in the local paper. He supported Kiwanis, was generous in the community and supportive of its youth and their educational development. One of his favorite projects was installing the log cabin at the Kiwanis Museum Complex on the north side of town.

John felt that he had lived a full and interesting life meeting people throughout the world whom he found to be unique in their own ways, just as was he unique in his own way. He will be missed by his family, friends, neighbors and his community. John firmly believed that it is best to live and let live. John was a wise traveler.

John was so pleased to realize how kind people were to him. He was especially thankful for the concern, care and love that he received from Stacy, Jenny and Jessica from Burgess Hospice.
Those surviving him are his brother, Lee and wife Alice with daughter Sara; his aunt, Dorothy Lindley and husband Jack; and nieces and nephews and their children.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John K. and Helen M. (Stanton) Hendricks; and one sister, Faye Cartmill.

Memorials for John are asked to be donated to the West Monona Educational Foundation.
