Mrs. Charles W. Backer, died Saturday, November 13, 1965 at a nursing home in Turin, Iowa at the age of 80 years, 8 months and 6 days.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 16, at the St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Mapleton. The Rev. E.E. Greene officiated. Burial was in Mt Hope cemetery in Mapleton under the direction of the Walter Funeral Home.

Pallbearers were Valquart Harder, Clifford LeFebvre, Ed Kelly, Andy Klotz, Walt Clausen and Al Bruning.

Mrs. Backer, the former Dorathea Petersen, was born March 7, 1885, in Germany. She came to the United States and Iowa at the age of 3. She was married to Charles W. Backer January 12, 1904 at Davenport, Iowa. They farmed near Battle Creek, Iowa, from 1919 until 1936 when they moved to Mapleton. He died in 1957. (Should be 15 July 1951)

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Clara Behne of Merced, California, two sons, Chris of Cheyenne, Wyo., and Otto of Mapleton; a brother, W.P. Peterson of Schleswig, Iowa; two sisters, Mrs. Fred Kragel of Mapleton and Mrs. Velma Baker of Schleswig; 11 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.
