Funeral Services Wednesday for C.W. Backer, 73

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday for Charles William Backer, 73, at St. Matthews Lutheran Church ion Mapleton. Mr. Backer had been a resident of Monona Country since 1913.

Mr. Backer passed away at his residence in Mapleton on July 15.

He was born in Hamburg, Germany, January 12, 1904, was married to Dora Petersen at Davenport, Iowa, who survives. Other survivors are three sons, Walter and Otto of Mapleton, Chris of Cheyenne, Wyo., and a daughter, Mrs. Clara Dehne, Mercod, California. Other survivors include 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mr. Backer had been in this country since 1893 when he came to Grand Mount, Iowa. He was a retired farmer and at one time had lived near Battle Creek.

He was a member of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church and services were conducted were conducted by the pastor, Rev. Daryl Schmidt.

Pall bearers were Dick Kahrs, John Else, Louis Goderson, Max Trulson, Vagourt Harder and Carl Moltman Sr. Burial was in Mt Hope Cemetery, under the direction of Byers-Walter Funeral Home.
