Mr. Reed, son of James and Catherine Reed, was born near Courtland, Illinois, October 3, 1861. When he was 4 years of age his parents moved West and settled near Monmouth, Jackson County, Iowa.

In the spring of 1882 he came to Monona County and farmed here continuously until two years ago when he retired and moved to his home in Mapleton.

\Mr. Reed was a kind and loving husband and father and of a jovial disposition. He was a member of the Modern Woodsmen and Rebekah lodges. For 23 years he was a member of the Methodist Church and a faithful attendant until several years ago when his hearing became affected.

He is survived by his widow and four children, Glenn Reed of Sioux City, Mrs. Lottie Schoenherr of Ute, Delmo Reed of Clarinda and Mrs. Nelsena Green of Hornick. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and three sisters, Mrs. Edith Schrader of Mapleton, Mrs. Carrie Gleason of Parker, S.D. and Mrs. Ella Williams of Missouri Valley.

One son, Elvin, died in a hospital in France in 1918 of wounds received in the World War and another son, Earl, also a World War veteran, received his honorable discharge in March 1919 and met with an accident on the Reed farm in July of the same year which caused his death.
