MAPLETON, Iowa | Richard "Rick" A. Ernst, 60, of Battle Creek, Neb., formerly of Mapleton, died Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2016, at his home.

A celebration of life service will be 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Kelly’s Country Club, 9601 West Norfolk Ave., in Norfolk, Neb. Private family graveside services will be at later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Stonacek Funeral Chapel in Norfolk.

Rick was born on Dec. 26, 1955, in Ida Grove, Iowa, the son of Levon and Regina (Erlemeier) Ernst. He attended Mapleton public schools, graduating from Mapleton Valley High School.

He was married to Barbara Murdock on June 28, 1975. After their marriage, the couple lived in Onawa Iowa, where he worked for Morton Buildings. They moved to Laurel, Neb., in 1981. To this union two children were born, Angie and Clint. The couple later divorced.

He married Janet Volquardsen on Dec. 26, 1996, in Las Vegas, Nev. To this union a son, Gage, was born. They lived in Battle Creek, Neb., and he worked for the J. Paul McIntosh Farms, Leprino Foods and Louis Dreyfus Ethanol Plant.

Rick enjoyed hunting and fishing and was an avid Husker fan. He was a tournament high school wrestling champion, loved watching high school wrestling and thoroughly enjoyed riding his Harley motorcycle. He loved his children and grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Janet Ernst of Battle Creek; children, Angie (Kevin) Strong of O'Neill, Neb., Clint Ernst and fiancee, Megan Werkowitch of Louisburg, Kan., and Gage Ernst and Sebastiana Vargas, both of Norfolk; six grandchildren; his siblings, Bonnie Ernst of Sioux City, Diane (Gary) Wittsche of Fairview, Texas, Ron (Jolene) Ernst of Ida Grove, Randy (Debra) Ernst of Mapleton, and Gloria (Mike) Hahn of Mapleton; along with many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Levon and Regina Ernst; two sisters, Nancy and Jean Marie; and a nephew, Jeremy.
