Eddith Harriett (Martin) Johnson, 97, of Onawa, Iowa died Tuesday, March 14, 2000 at Elmwood Care Centre, Onawa.

Eddith was born July 28, 1902 at Moorhead, Iowa, the daughter of George W. and Minnie (Rude) Martin. She graduated from Onawa High School and attended Cedar Falls Teachers College and the University of Iowa. She was a teacher for 49 ˝ years retiring in 1972. She was a resident of Onawa 72 years and was a longtime member of Faith Lutheran Church, Onawa.

Eddith was married to J. Julius Johnson June 7, 1951 in Onawa, Iowa. He passed away December 5, 1978.

Survivors include four nieces, Carolyn Westergaard of Whiting, Iowa, Barbara Strachan, Holly McFarlane and Carol Buckmeier; a nephew, Harold Reese of Newton, Iowa; Julius’s daughter, Emeline Hope; and his three grandchildren, Marilyn Powell of Colorado, Darrel Hope of Sioux City, and John Hope of Florida.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two sisters, Mary Bokorney and Mabel Reese Crawford; one brother, Wilbur R. Martin and a sister-in-law.

Services were at 1:30 p.m. Friday, March 17, 2000 at Faith Lutheran Church, Onawa, Iowa with Pastor Steven Hetzel, officiating. The congregation sang “Precious Lord, Take My Hand” and “Rock of Ages.” Alisha Hope sang “Amazing Grace” and Debra Lauritsen was pianist. Visitation was Thursday from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. and resumed again at 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at Rush Family Chapel, Onawa. Burial was in the Onawa Cemetery.

Casket bearers were Brandon Hope, Todd and John Reese, Lee and James Westergaard and Ben Dunham.

Arrangements were under the direction of Rush Family Care Service, Onawa.
