Onawa, Iowa—George Henry Cole, Jr., 70, of Onawa died Sunday March 19, 2000, at his residence.
Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Pearson Funeral Home in Onawa. Burial will be in Onawa Cemetery, with military rites conducted by Army National Guard and Monona County Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2694. There will be no visitation.

Mr. Cole was born May 25, 1929, in Onawa, the son of George H. and Margaret (Hogancamp) Cole Sr. He attended Onawa Public School. He served in the U.S. Army as a staff sergeant during the Korean War from 1949 to 1952.

He married Caro, A. Funkhouser on Oct. 25, 1952, in Onawa. He was employed with Monona County for 16 years, then with the City of Onawa for 26 years. He retired in 1992.

He was a member of First Christian Church in Onawa and Monona County Veteran of Foreign Wars. He was a volunteer fireman for over 20 years. He enjoyed woodworking and crossword puzzles.
Survivors include his wife, two sons and their wives, Bill and Kysa of Sioux City and David and Jackie of Sloan, Iowa; a daughter and her husband, Cynda and Ed Gustin of Onawa; five grandchildren, Brad, Dustin, Brittany and Alea Cole and Jeremy Hinkel; a great-granddaughter; special friends and care givers, Larry and Kristi Ruffcorn; two brothers and their wives, Bob and Freda Cole of Boulder City, Nev. And Jerry and Candy Cole of Hiawatha, Kan.; two sisters, Louise Stanton of Onawa and Susan and her husband, Willie Hanks of Scranton, Iowa; two sister-in-law, Jan Cole of Onawa and Cindy Fitzerald of Pine Bluff, Ark.; and a brother-in-law, Arthur Heisler of Sergeant Bluff.

He was preceded in death by a son, Larry Cole; three brothers, Charles Lyle, Myron and Keith; three sisters, Ruth, Mary and Catherine; and his parents.

Memorials may be directed to Monona County Veterans Memorial Museum.
