Bernard “Pug” Baker, 77, of Mapleton, died Monday, Dec. 8, at Unity Point Health- St. Luke’s in Sioux City, following a courageous battle with lung cancer.

Bernard Theodore was born Feb. 15, 1937, in Sioux City, the son of Theodore “Ted” and Alyce (O’Connor) Baker. He grew up in the Mapleton and Castana area and attended Castana High School.

Pug learned how to be a butcher from Richard Knuth, and he worked at the Mapleton Processing plant for over 33 years. Pug also worked for Ronnie Burke at the Castana Processing Plant for over 15 years.

In his younger years, Pug enjoyed traveling, riding horses, dune buggies, and ATVs, and was a member of the Mapleton Saddle Club. Pug also enjoyed hunting, especially coyote hunting, fishing, and all animals. He especially loved attending his children and grandchildren’s sports and school activities. Pug appreciated the beautiful scenery in Colorado, especially during the Fall season.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Danbury.

Survivors include his wife, Christine “Chris” Baker of Mapleton; his children, Teria Baker and her special friend (Kevin Bernauer) of Danbury, B.J. (Sara) Baker of Lawton, and Kelsey “K.C.” Baker of Mapleton; grandchildren, Justin, Jeremiah, Kassidee, Kallee, Kaden, and Adreanna; his brother, Wayne (Marilyn) Baker of Indianola; father-in-law, Kenny Butler, and his special friend (Charlotte Patten) of Onawa; one nephew, Larry Baker of Kansas City, Mo.; and several cousins, other relatives, and good friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Theodore “Ted” and Alyce; and an infant brother, Russell Baker.

A memorial service was 1 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 11, at the United Methodist Church in Danbury with Pastor Gary Fridley, officiating.

Music selections were “Silent Night,” “When I Get Where I’m Going,” and “On The Wings Of A Snow White Dove.”

Arrangements were under the direction of Rush Family Care Service, Onawa.
