Clark H. Downing Jr., 79, of Sioux City passed away Saturday, July 5, 2008, at Holy Spirit Retirement Home in Sioux City following a courageous battle with cancer.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Morningside Lutheran Church in Sioux City, with the Rev. Kevin Lee officiating. Following the lunch, burial will be in St. Clair Cemetery, Ute, Iowa, with military rites. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton, Iowa.

Clark Harold Downing Jr. was born May 21, 1929, in Williamston, Mich., to Clark and Lucille (Lloyd) Downing. He attended elementary and high school in Ute and a semester at Morningside College in Sioux City. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1948 to 1969, retiring with the rank of first sergeant. He held many declarations including the Purple Heart Medal. His work experience included costumer service and production quality control of new homes.

He spent his retirement years enjoying life with his family and wintering in California. He liked to play golf and work on many remodeling projects. He will be remembered for his stories and quick-witted humor.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce Downing of Sioux City; 12 children and spouses, Colleen and Mark Gallagher of Pasadena, Md., Clark Downing III of Leesburg, Va., Genny Lou and Stan James of Leesburg, Va., Gary and Jana Downing of Warrenton, Va., Keith and Vickey Downing of Edgewater, Md., Jon Scott Downing of Gulf Port, Miss., Lori Downing of Ohio, Chris and Tina Downing of Omaha, Michelle and Mark Collins of Schererville, Ind., Monica and Jim Petersen of Lawton, Iowa, Michael Shanahan of Sioux City and Melissa and Jeff Campos of East Highland, Calif.; two brothers, Charles Downing of Jacksonville, Fla., and David Downing of Mentor, Ohio; 20 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, Clark Harold Downing Sr.; his mother, Lucille Downing; a grandson, Matt Gallagher; and a brother, Gary Downing.
