9 November 2014ONAWA, Iowa | Doris Ruth Cockerton, 97, of Onawa, formerly of Whiting, Iowa, died Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2014 at Elmwood Care Centre in Onawa.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Christian Church in Onawa, with the Rev. John Sears officiating. Burial will be in Harrison Cemetery, rural Whiting, Iowa. Visitation will be 6:30 to 8 p.m. Monday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Rush Family Chapel in Onawa. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.
Doris Ruth Cockerton was born Oct. 3, 1917, at Kellerton, Iowa, the daughter of Grover Guy and Ola Mildred (Duffield) Mackey. She attended grade school in Ringgold County and graduated from Whiting High School in 1934.
Doris and Lyle Cockerton were united in marriage on June 23, 1934, at Elk Point, S.D. One daughter, Betty, was born to this union. Doris and Lyle farmed near Whiting until Lyle’s death on Jan. 22, 1973.
In 1976, Doris moved to Onawa. She enjoyed home life, nature, cooking, sewing, and being with friends. She was a 4-H leader for more than 33 years.
Doris was a member of First Christian Church in Onawa.
Survivors include her two sisters, Alberta Maher of Onawa, and Roberta Funkhouser of Sacramento, Calif.; one brother, Robert Mackey of San Francisco, Calif.; her special extended family, Melinda, Roger, Gary and Heather Alsman, all of Omaha; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by parents, Grover and Ola; husband, Lyle; daughter, Betty (LeRoy) Hamel; two brothers, Howard (Ruby) Mackey and Hollis (Frances) Mackey; one sister, Dorothy (Roscoe) Dutton; two brothers-in-law, Ralph Maher and Bill Funkhouser; and one sister-in-law, Joyce Mackey.
