E. C. Whiting, former state senator, one of the pioneers of the Hawkeye State, and a forty-year resident of Monona County, expired last night at midnight at the age of 76, of Bright's disease, of which he had long been a sufferer, He retained his mental faculties nearly to the last and passed away surrounded by members of his family.

Judge Whiting was born in Otsego county, New York, January 17, 1821. He was the son of Charles and Laurinda Whiting. When he was eight years of age his parents moved to Wayne County, New York and in 1837 the family moved to Lake county, Ohio. In 1843 he removed to Madison county, Alabama, where he engaged in the dry goods and cotton trade. He married Nancy Criner on September 7, 1848 in Madison county, Alabama. In 1850 he caught California gold fever. In 1852 he returned to New York, thence to Ohio, back to Alabama and in 1853 located in Iowa county, Iowa, where he bought a large tract of land formerly the reservation of the Mesquakie Indians. He then returned to Alabama, but came back to Iowa in 1854. In July of 1855 he sold his land to the Amana Society, which still retains possession of it. In 1855 he came to Monona County and with his brother, Newell A. Whiting he purchased 7,500 acres.

In 1857 he was elected county judge and held the office for ten years. In 1864 he was elected to the board of supervisors and served until 1870. He received the Democratic nomination for Congress in 1874 losing to Addison Oliver. In 1883 he was elected to the state senate and in 1885 he received the Democratic nomination for Governor against Larrabee and lost the election.

Mr. Whiting is survived by his wife and children, Julia, Ida, Will, Ella, Woodson, Helen and Edna. The funeral will be held at 3 o'clock Saturday at the Whiting home two miles northeasr of Whiting.
