Ernest "Ernie" Eugene Harwig, 72, of Council Bluffs, Iowa, passed away August 26, 2014 at Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M. Saturday, August 30, 2014, at the Rush Family Chapel in Onawa, Iowa with Pastor John Sears, officiating. Burial will follow in the Onawa Cemetery in Onawa. Military Honors will be provided by the American Legion David McNeill Post #129, Onawa, and Monona County VFW Post #2694. Visitation will be held 9:00 A.M. to service time on Saturday at the chapel in Onawa. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.

Ernest "Ernie" was born October 6, 1941, in Dell Grove Township, Pine City, Minnesota, the son of William Fredrick and Alice (Darrow) Harwig.

Ernie served in the United States Navy during the early Vietnam era as a Navy Seal, and later on the U.S.S. Vesuvius as a radio technician. He also worked with the Gemini Program associated with NASA. He later attended college in California and worked for AT&T. Ernie was then transferred to Minnesota where he had many endeavors including owner/operator of a convince/gas station and installed telephone systems for large businesses, and sold telephone equipment and supplies. Ernie also enjoyed real estate and had several rental properties.

Ernie is survived by his spouse, Linda Coleman of Council Bluffs, IA; his mother, Alice Clark of Madison, SD; four sons, Ernest Harwig and wife Brenda of Overland Park, KS, Michael Harwig of Sacramento, CA, Ray Harwig of Olathe, KS, and David Harwig; two daughters, April Harwig of KS, and Denice Farrell Harwig; stepson, Donie (Rolette) Coleman of Onawa, Iowa; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; nine brothers and sisters, Sally Bates, Sue (Jamie) Berry, Cheryl Deelstra, and Lori Anderson, all of Madison, SD, Bob (Judy) Harwig of DeSoto, KS, Bill (Cathy) Harwig of Baltic, SD, Henry Harwig of Sioux Falls, SD, Debbie Stangle of Rapid City, SD, and Richard (Mary Jo) Harwig of Brandon, SD.

He was preceded in death by his father, William Fredrick Harwig.
