Wallace H.N. Bergstrom, 80, of Onawa, Iowa died Saturday, August 23, 2014, at the Floyd Place in Sergeant Bluff, Iowa after a long battle with cancer and Alzheimer's.

Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Friday, August 29, 2014 at the Faith Lutheran Church in Onawa, IA with Pastor Joel Gueningsman, officiating. Burial will be in the Onawa Cemetery, Onawa, Iowa. Visitation will be held 10:00 A.M. until service time Friday, August 29, 2014 at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa, Iowa.

Wallace Henry Neal "Wally" was born September 13, 1933 in Onawa, Iowa the son of Henry and Nellie (Abrahamson) Bergstrom. He was born and raised in the Onawa area and graduated from Onawa High School in. He then attended college at Iowa State where he graduated with an education and farm management major.

Wally was drafted to the United States Army and after six months of concentrated schooling, he was sent to the Signal Corps in Germany. He enjoyed this work while in Europe and was able to take tours. He especially enjoyed learning about his ancestors in Sweden. After his time in Germany, Wally returned to Onawa and farmed with his family.

Wally and Phyllis Haller were united in marriage on December 27, 1960 at Sioux City, Iowa. They worked the farm together. One daughter was born to this union, Janet.

People enjoyed working for Wally due to his understanding manner. Wally was known to be a compassionate and patient father. He always found time for his family. In the 1980's, along with farming, Wally worked as a rural mail carrier out of Onawa and treasured every person on his route.

He was a longtime member of the Faith Lutheran Church in Onawa. He volunteered for various workshops and served on the church council. He organized and was there from the start of Monona Services, the local workshop for handicapped people.

Those left to honor his memory are his wife, Phyllis Bergstrom of Sergeant Bluff, IA; his daughter, Janet Bergstrom of Sergeant Bluff, IA; sisters-in-law, Pauline Meloy of Sioux City, IA and Sally Oswald of Cleghorn, IA; brother-in-law, Tom (Mary Sue) Haller of Ames, IA and many relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Fred and Clarence; his sister, Edith Whitehorn; brothers-in-law, John Haller and Robert Meloy.
