ONAWA, Iowa — Mary Avis Hamil, 96, of Onawa died Sunday, Aug. 23, 1998, at Elmwood Care Centre in Onawa.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Onawa Cemetery, with the Rev. Alta M. Morgan officiating. There will be no visitation.

Arrangements are under the direction of Pearson Funeral Home in Onawa.

Miss Hamil was born Aug. 4, 1902, in Onawa, the daughter of Brenton and Mary (Messing) Hamil. She graduated from Onawa High School in 1922, and Iowa State Teachers College in 1924. She taught kindergarten for four years in Mapleton, Iowa. She received her bachelor of arts degree in English and journalism in 1933, from Iowa State University.

She cared for her parents until their death and was employed at Rexall Drug Store in Onawa. She moved to Des Moines in 1938, where she worked at Younkers Department Store. She retired in 1967 after 29 years of service. She returned to Onawa in 1990.

She was a member of Congregational Church in Onawa, 20 year Club at Younkers, Queen Esther Chapter 222 of the Order of the Eastern Star in Onawa, Iowa Pottery Association and Ashton Women's Club. While living in Des Moines, she was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and Plymouth Congregational Church.

Survivors include three nephews, three nieces, a sister-in-law, and many grandnieces and grandnephews.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, two brothers-in-law, three brothers, two sisters-in-law, three nephews and a niece.

Memorials may be directed to History and Genealogy Department of the Onawa Public Library.
