Leon Barnes, 86, of Onawa, Iowa, died Sunday May 31, 1998, at Elmwood Care Centre in Onawa, Iowa.

Mr. Barnes was born June 21, 1911, at Coldwater, Michigan, the son of Hugh and Myrtle (Barnes) Ream. He graduated from Centerville High School in Centerville, Michigan. On January 15, 1938, he married Frances Putnam in Auburn, Indiana. He was a machinist at Aerojet General in Azusa, California for 16 years and at Kellogg Cereal Company in Battle Creek, Michigan for 9 years, retiring in 1976. The couple have lived in Onawa for 19 years.

Survivors include his wife, Frances; two daughters, Helen Wilson of Onawa, and Janet and her husband, Ronald Widener of Lorida, Florida; one half brother and his wife, Hugh and Gwen Ream, Jr. of Sturgis, Michigan; four grandsons, William D. and wife, Kathy Wilson of Onawa, Steven Leon and wife, Karen Wilson of Dallas, Texas, Mark Gillroy of Florida, and John Gillroy of San Diego, California; one granddaughter, Bobbie and her husband, Greg Carpenter of Onawa; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law; and three brothers.

Graveside services were held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 3, 1998, at the Onawa Cemetery in Onawa, Iowa, with Rev. Steven C. Hetzel officiating.

Arrangements were by the Pearson Funeral Home, Onawa, Iowa.
