William "Bill" Hall Mathes, 77, of Onawa died Tuesday, May 20, 1997, at the Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa.

Graveside services were held at 1 PM, Friday, in Onawa Cemetery, with Rev. Donald R. Ludwick officiating. Mr. Mathes was born February 27, 1920, in Downing, Mo., the son of Monteville and Sarah (Cristy) Mathes. He was baptized in the Baptist faith. He married Ruby Lee Ferris on November 29, 1941, in Kirksville, Mo.

The couple farmed in Missouri and the Des Moines, Iowa areas prior to moving to Onawa in 1958. He owned a Laundromat and the Superior 400 Service Station, which was later known as the Gulf Station in Onawa. He was employed as a bus driver for the West Monona Community School for 30 years, retiring in 1994.

Survivors include his wife; five daughters, Phyllis Ann and her husband Loyal Greenstreet of Derby Kan., Marilyn and her husband Jerry Erlandson of Walnut, Iowa, Linda Hopkins of Bellevue, Neb., Debra Mathes of Onawa, and Kathy Mathes of Mustang, Okla.; four sons, Hillis F. and his wife Claudia, William Keith, all of Kennard, Neb., Phillip L. of Tempe, Ariz., and Steven and his wife Lori of Onawa; a sister, Jennette Turner of Kirksville, Mo.; 14 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers; and a son-in-law.
