Steven John Ankerstjerne, 43, of Onawa, Iowa, died Thursday, May 29, 1997, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa.

Mr. Ankerstjerne had lived in Onawa most of his life and graduated from West Monona High School in 1972. He married his high school sweetheart Vernice Gloyer of Whiting on October 6, 1972, at the Congregational Church in Onawa. To this loving union were born two children, Charity Marie and Travis John.

Steve enjoyed hunting, archery, feeding a menagerie of backyard birds and squirrels, nature in general, and spending time with his family and friends. He loved what he did for a living, driving an 18 wheeler. He spent most of his adult life trucking over the road. He had been in all 48 continental states. He began his trucking career with his dad, and most recently drove for Weinrich Trucking, Inc. of Hinton, Iowa. He was a founding member of the Tri-River Archery Club and was affiliated with the First Christian Church of Onawa.

For the past school year, Steve had been an instrumental part of the trucker buddy program for the West Monona Fifth Grade Class of 2004.

Steve also loved to spend time farming with Vernon and Lenora Gloyer at their farm in rural Whiting.

Survivors include his wife, Vernice, and their two children Charity and Travis, all of Onawa; his parents, John and Lila Ankerstjerne of Onawa; his parents-in-law, Vernon and Lenora Gloyer of Whiting; two sisters, Sandy Beechy and her husband, Dave, and Sherri Johnston and her husband Doug, all of Blencoe; a brother, Scott of Onawa; his maternal grandmother, Ellen Chapin of Whiting; a special family friend, Dwight Harms, nieces and nephews Mindy and Aaron Beechy, Adam, Matt, and Jenna Johnston, and Breeanna Ankerstjeme; as well as the class of 2004.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Megan Jo; maternal grandfather, Walter Chapin; and paternal grandparents, Martin and Chris Ankerstjerne.

Funeral services were held Monday, June 2, 1997, at the First Christian Church of Onawa, with Rev. Don Ludwick officiating. A large host of family and friends gathered to pay last respects.

Organist was Mrs. Vince Phillips. Soloists were Rev. Louis A. Aitken, Annette Sorenson, and Miss Jenna Johnston. Honorary Casket bearers were Dave Beechy, Aaron Beechy, Doug Johnston, Adam Johnston, Matt Johnston, Bryan Cox, Bruce Cox, Dwight Harms, Scott Ankerstjerne, and Dan Hyatt.

Active Bearers were Rich Kniefl, Mike Weinrich, Mark Bellflower, Charlie Brown, Mike Brenden, Gary Bellis, Barry Clayton, and Perry Thrift. A committal service was held at the Onawa Cemetery with the Rev. Earle R. Potts officiating.

Arrangements were made by Pearson Funeral Home of Onawa, Iowa.
