MAPLETON, Iowa | Donald R. "Don" Muckey, 67, of Mapleton passed away Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2014, at a Sioux City hospital with his family at his bedside, following a diagnosis of cancer in May.

Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15, with a prayer service at 8 p.m. followed by a Masonic service, at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton. A graveside service will be 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 30, in Mount Hope Cemetery, Mapleton, with military graveside rites conducted by the American Legion Loren Hollister Post 496 of Mapleton.

Donald Roger Muckey was born on Nov. 27, 1946, at home in Mapleton, the son of Don and Eva Louise (Green) Muckey. He grew up in Mapleton and graduated from Maple Valley High School with the class of 1965. On June 8, 1965, Don entered the U.S. Air Force serving his country proudly. He was honorably discharged on June 7, 1971.

On April 1, 1967, Don was united in marriage to Glenda Nichols at St. John’s United Methodist Church in Mapleton. She was a young lady he first met while in the fifth grade in school. They recently celebrated their 47th wedding anniversary.

Don began his life’s career as a meat cutter at Moore Brothers Grocery Store in Onawa, Iowa, and then transferred to the Moore Brothers location in Mapleton. He continued that career at Iowa Beef in Dakota City. While at Iowa Beef, he also attended Sioux Empire College in Hawarden, Iowa, completing his two-year course with high grades. He then worked at John Morrell in Estherville, Iowa. After being gone for 11 years, the family moved back to Mapleton in 1983, and Don worked for LaFrenz Grocery Store, which then became Goslin Grocery. Don returned to employment at Iowa Beef for a short time before going into partnership with his brother-in-law, Rick Nichols, at the Mapleton Locker Plant. He retired from his meat cutting career five years ago and learned to enjoy a new life. Just a year ago, he began driving a school bus for Maple Valley Anthon-Oto School, a job he loved, satisfying his lifelong desire to drive a big rig.

Don was a gifted woodworker, with the talent of taking any scrap wood and turning it into a beautiful finished product. For Don, woodworking had to be fun so it didn’t feel like a job. If he could make a cure out of wood, he would.

He was a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church in Mapleton, the Masonic Lodge and the Shriners, having volunteered in the Denison Shriners Animal Unit. He was a extremely patriotic man and a member of the American Legion Loren Hollister Post 496. He enjoyed time spent fishing and camping. Above all, he loved his family with a special focus on his grandchildren and their events and teams. Don had a bigger heart than he ever let on.

Family members left to continue their love for Don include his wife, Glenda; two sons and their wives, Richard and Marie Muckey of Moville, Iowa, and Darren and Kristy Muckey of Lee Summit, Mo.; eight grandchildren, Dylan and Jacob Muckey, Emily and Chelsea Yockey, and Noah, Zoe, Brooklyn, and Logan Muckey; two brothers, Mike (Sue) Muckey, and Jim (Terre) Muckey, all of Sioux City; a brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Rick and Becky Nichols of Mapleton; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding Don in death are his parents, Don and Eva Muckey; a brother, Richard Muckey; and a sister, Marsha Morris.
