Thelma Alice Simmons, 90, of Onawa died Wednesday, November 17, 1999, at Burgess Health Center in Onawa.

Mrs. Simmons was born June 20, 1909 in Harrison County near Little Sioux, Iowa, the daughter of Perry and Ella (Johnson) Young. She moved to a farm near Blencoe as a child and attended country school. Thelma married Arnold Simmons October 29, 1938 at Council Bluffs. Iowa. The couple farmed near Pisgah for 9 years before moving to Onawa where they operated a greenhouse for 18 years and Simmons Grocery for 11 years. She was a member of the Little Sioux Christian Church.

Survivors include her husband Arnold of Onawa; a son, Duane of Onawa; five grandchildren: Randy Simmons and wife Pam of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Barbara and her husband LaVerne Holmberg of Dakota City, NE; Chane Downs of South Sioux City, NE; Corillian Coulombe of Dakota City, NE; and Rhiannon Ericson of Wisconsin; and two great-grandchildren: Anastasia and Damien Downs.

She was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Joanne Coulombe; 5 brothers: Arthur, Melvin, Wayne, Elton, and Burnell; 4 sisters: Hazel Bryan, Goldie Hessler, Corey Nelson, and Ruby Wood.

A visitation was held from 4:00 - 8:30 p.m. Friday, November 19. Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 20 in Rush Family Care Service Chapel in Onawa with Pastor Donald R. Ludwick officiating. Organ solos of "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" and " The Old Rugged Cross" were provided by Mrs. Vince Phillips.

Casket Bearers were Ray Rose, Lyle Collison, Mike Riley, Kenneth Richardson, LaVerne Holmberg, and Charles Richardson.

Interment was in the Onawa Cemetery at Onawa, Iowa, under the direction of Rush Family Care Service.
