Resident of Maple Heights cites at age 103

Violet A. Kueny, age 103, of Mapleton died Friday, June 2, 2000, at Mapleton, Iowa.

Services were held 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 5, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton with Rev. Edmund Tiedeman officiating. Burial was in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Mapleton. Lector for the service was Mary Kueny and the offertory procession was Kristine Kueny and Michael Kueny. A rosary was held at 3:30 p.m. Sunday by St. Mary's Guild and a vigil wake service was held at 8:00 p.m. at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Violet Anna Kueny was born August 27, 1896, in a sod roofed house in Wilton, North Dakota, the daughter of George and Anna (Scholidon) Schrunk.

She was the oldest of six children. In 1905, she traveled with her parents in a covered wagon to the Danbury-Mapleton, Iowa area where she grew up and was educated.

On September 19, 1916, Vi was united in marriage to Charles H. Kueny in Danbury, Iowa. The couple farmed in the Mapleton area. Vi stayed at home raising her two children, Donna and Maurice, rendering lard, churning butter, baking and sewing. Vi and Charles enjoyed dancing together at any one of the local dance halls, all now gone. Charles died April 3, 1965. Vi lived in Omaha, Nebraska for about 15 years and returned to live in Mapleton where she lived independently until entering Maple Heights Nursing Home in February of 1994.

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton as well as St. Mary's Guild. She was also a member of the Royal Neighbors of America. She was known for her fine seamstress abilities and did beautiful work for her family and many in the community.

Those survivors left to cherish Vi's memory include one daughter and her husband, Donna and Robert Petersen of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; one daughter-in-law, Fern Kueny of Mapleton, Iowa; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren, nine great-great-grandchildren and one sister, Rose Drea of Mapleton, Iowa, along with many other relatives, neighbors and good friends.

Along with her husband, Vi was preceded in death by her parents, one son, Maurice and four brothers, Fred, Herbert, Francis and Richard Schrunk.

Pallbearers were James Kueny, Clifford Flynn, David Flynn, Thomas Petersen, Robert Hoskins and Ron Kueny.
