Family and friends remember Larry Kafton

Larry F. Kafton, age 61, of Mapleton, Iowa, died Saturday, June 24, 2000, at Sioux City, Iowa.

Services were held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 27 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton with Rev. Edmund Tiedeman and Rev. Robert Schimmer officiating. Burial was in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Music was provided by Joyce Kafton, organist and St. Mary's Choir. A vigil wake service was held at 7:30 p.m. Monday, followed by a Rosary, led by the Knights of Columbus at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Larry Francis Kafton was born November 6, 1938 in Monona County near Danbury, Iowa, the son of Nels and Zelma (Uhl) Kafton. He graduated with the Mapleton High School class of 1956. On June 11, 1960, he was united in marriage to Connie Russell of South Sioux City, Nebraska. He was a loving husband and father of nine children. Larry worked for Wilson Concrete and Great Plains Gas Company as well as farming for many years.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton along with the Knights of Columbus. He was also very active in his community and served as volunteer fireman in Mapleton for years.

Those survivors left to cherish Larry's memory include Connie, his wife of 40 years; his mother, Zelma Kafton of Mapleton, Iowa; his nine children, LuAnn Pothos and her husband, John, of Henderson, Nebraska, Kerri Butler of Moorhead, Iowa, Jeffrey Kafton and his wife, Renee of Danbury, Iowa, Irene Sloan and her husband, Kevin, of Littleton, Colorado, Christopher Kafton and his wife, Jill, of Pleasant Hill, Iowa, Dawn Hancock and her husband, Barry, of Harker Heights, Texas, Eric Kafton of Sioux City, Iowa, Gregory Kafton of Littleton, Colorado and Heather Prell and her husband, Kevin of Danbury, Iowa; one daughter-in-law, Teresa Kafton of Danbury, Iowa; his brothers and sisters, Joan Utterback and her husband, Bruce, of Hemet, California, Carla Haggerty of Danbury, Iowa, twin brothers, Garry Kafton and his wife, Linda, of Westphalia, Iowa, Kenneth Kafton and his wife, Peggy of Danbury, Iowa, and David Kafton and his wife, Celene of Littleton, Colorado and 16 grandchildren, along with many other relatives, neighbors and good friends.

Larry was preceded in death by his father, Nels Kafton.

Pallbearers were Lynn Hamann, Mike Nielsen, Ronnie Gosch, Larry Miller, Terry Green and Marvin Sonksen.
