MAPLETON, Iowa — Leo Joseph Ullrich, 89, of Mapleton died Saturday at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be at 10:30 4 P.M. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton, with the Rev. Edmund Tiedeman officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a vigil wake service at 7:30 p.m. followed by a rosary said by the Knights of Columbus, the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Mr. Ullrich was born Jan. 6, 1908, at Ute, Iowa, the son of Englebert and Julia (Schaffer) Ullrich. He was raised in the Ute area and later moved with his family to the Mapleton area.

He married Hildegarde Thomas on Jan. 27, 1931, in Mapleton. The couple farmed in the Mapleton area until moving into Mapleton in 1980.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and a 50 year member of the 3rd and 4th degree of
the Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, John and his wife, Jean and Bill, all of Omaha, Neb. and Ray and his wife, Sherri of Dakota City; five daughters, Rita and her husband, Paul Meister, Eileen and her husband, Dean Schaaf, all of Dallas, Texas, Hildegarde and her husband, Doug Lauters of Marcus, Iowa, Nancy and her husband, Bob Cannella of Omaha and Jeanette Ullrich of Denison, Iowa; two brothers, Ben and his wife, Ella Ullrich of Whiting, Iowa and Walt Ullrich of Columbia, Mo.; a sister, Edith Streck of Mapleton; a sister-in-law, Leona, Ullrich of Whiting; 24 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Larry and Leo; a daughter, Mary in infancy; a grandson, Dennis Lauters; three sisters; and a brother.
