She was baptized into the Lutheran faith as an infant at Wichita where she grew up and was educated. In 1925 the family moved to Mapleton, Iowa, where on May 9, 1929, she was confirmed at St. Matthew Lutheran Church.

Along with multiple other honors, she received the Thomas Jefferson Award on December 7, 1993 in recognition of her exceptionally neat, accurate, and complete weather records reported to the National Weather Service. This high honor is only presented to five recipients in the nation each year.

Those survivors left to cherish May's memory include two sons, Wayne of Mapleton and his children, Mark, Darin and Carla, and Daryl and his wife, Connie of Mapleton and their children, Amy and Bryan; one daughter, Jean and her husband, Howard Watson of Liberty, Missouri and their children, Kerrie and her husband, Mike Pemberton, Lisa (Watson) Endsley and Lori Watson; five great-grandchildren, Madison Endsley, Mitchel and Devin Pemberton and Derone and Shianne Watson; one brother and his wife, LeRoy and Anna Wasmund of Anthon, Iowa, and one sister, Dorothy Pope of Mapleton, Iowa, along with many other relatives, neighbors and good friends.
