Whiting, Iowa--Kenneth J. Northrup, 71, former superintendent of school at Whiting died Friday, Oct. 3, 1997, at his residence.

Services were 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Whiting Community School gymnasium, with M. Shawn Walden of the Whiting Christian Church officiating. Burial will be in Whiting City Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Emery-Johnson Post 481.

Mr. Northrup was born September 24, 1926, in Fairfax, SD, the son of Everett James and Olga (Walstrom) Northrup. He graduated from Fairfax High School in 1943. He served with the US Army Military Police during World War II. He married Gertrude Cozad on November 28, 1947, in Butte, Nebraska.

He received his bachelors degree from Springfield College in Springfield, SD and his masters degree from Vermillion college in Vermillion, SD. He farmed for two years before teaching in various schools, where he also served as principal and/or superintendent. The couple moved to Whiting in 1972, where he served as superintendent of the Whiting School until his retirement in 1988. Following his retirement, he taught and served as interim superintendent at the Missouri Valley School for six months.

He was a member of the American Legion Emery-Johnson Post 481 at Whiting and served as executive director of the Monona County Veteran Affairs office for several months.

Survivors include his wife; a son and his wife, Terry and Rita of Homer, Neb.; three daughters, Joann and her husband Robin Goodyear of Imperial, Mo., Vickie and her husband Marvin Petersen of Glava, Iowa and Tracy Allman of Sioux Falls, SD; a sister Vivian Reckling of Fairfax, SD; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter, Cindy Rose.
