Fredrick Arthur Putnam, 84, of Mapleton, died Thursday, February 16, 1989, at the Maple Heights nursing Home in Mapleton.

Services were held on Monday, February 20, 1989, at 2:00 p.m. at St. John's United Methodist Church in Mapleton with Pastor Dick Krambeck officiating. Mrs. Elaine Krambeck was the organist and the congregation sang, "Oh God Our Help In Ages Past" and "Nearer My God To Thee".

Mr. Putnam was born on April 1, 1904, to Fredrick, Sr. and Gertrude (Sanders) Putnam in Butte, Nebraska. He graduated from Butte High School, then attended Wayne State Teachers College. He taught in rural Boyd County Schools. He married Alice Samuelson July 15, 1927, at Belvedere, South Dakota. After the marriage, they moved to Naper, Nebraska. Eleven years later they moved to Spencer, Nebraska. He was manager of the Krotter Lumber Co. at Naper and Spencer, Nebraska. In 1945, the couple moved to a farm near Mapleton where they farmed for most of the remainder of his life.

His wife, Alice, preceded him in death on April 19, 1986. For the last year and a half he resided at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton, due to ill health.

He was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church at Mapleton.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two sisters and six brothers.

Survivors include two sons, Dale of Lincoln, Nebraska and Dr. Rev. Gary Putnam of Stockton, California, six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Lyle Rose, Dale Engelke, Dale Faverty, Dale Wimmer, Orville Lundeen and Don Masters.

Funeral arrangements were made under the direction of the Walter Funeral Home of Mapleton.
