Van V. Quackenbush 1905 - 1971

Van V. Quackenbush was born October 22, 1905 at Turin, Iowa and passed from this life in the Burgess Memorial Hospital early Wednesday morning July 21, 1971. Death came following a long illness, he had reached the age of 65 years.

Van spent his lifetime in this community. He joined with his father in the drainage contracting business and following his fathers death he continued in this work. The Quackenbush Drainage Contractors was one of the earliest of this type work in the state. Van was very successful in his vocation and loved every minute of the work. One of the most difficult things in his life was the forced retirement because of failing health 16 years ago.

On July, 12, 1930 he was united in marriage with Vera Anderson at Le Mars, Iowa. To this union one daughter Kaye was born.

He was a member of the First Christian Church of Onawa; Weston Lodge A. F. and A. M. of Whiting, Sioux City Consistory, Abu-Bekr Shrine also of Sioux City and a Charter member of the Eagles Lodge Number 2270 of Onawa.

Van was an honest man; good to know and one who had many friends. He possessed a sincere interest in helping his fellow man and, always had a deep concern for those with physical handicaps.

Survivors include his wife. Vera of Onawa; daughter Mrs. Jean Luc Bordeaux of Santa Monica, California: one grand-daughter, Vanessa; and one sister, Mrs. Harold (Mary) Krepps of Plymouth, Mich.

He was preceded in death by a brother, John.

Services were held at 9:30 a.m. Friday, July 23, 1971 at the First Christian Church in Onawa with the Rev. Everett Epperson officiating. Jane Reynolds was the organist. Bearers were Charles Kelly, Wayne Burgess, Virgil Johnson, Merle Mock, Durward Karlson and Chuck Myers. Interment was in the Onawa Cemetery with arrangements by the Pearson Funeral Home of Onawa.
