Vera Quackenbush, 86, of Onawa, IA, died Wednesday, April 21, 1999, at Elmwood Care Centre in Onawa.

Vera was born April 14, 1913, in Castana, IA, the daughter of Orlando and Mary (Moravek) Anderson. She was raised in the Whiting community and attended the Harrison Township and Whiting schools. On July 12, 1930, she married Van Quackenbush in LeMars, IA, and moved to Onawa.

From 1938 to 1945 the couple lived on a farm west of Whiting, farming, running a drainage contracting business, and owning a hardware store in Whiting while Van farmed during World War II. Van returned to the full time drainage contracting business in Onawa while Vera continued her bookkeeping skills organizing the necessary book; keeping for Quackenbush Construction Company. Mr. Quackenbush died July 21, 1971, at Onawa. Vera became a resident of Elmwood Care Center in 1990.

She was a member of the First Christian Church, Onawa, Iowa; past member of Order of Eastern Star and of the Wives of Shriners.

Survivors include her daughter, Mary Kaye and her husband Jean/Luc Bordeaux of Santa Monica, CA, and Bois LeRoy, France; a granddaughter, Vanessa Bordeaux of Dallas, TX; a niece, Dixie Sherrill of Whiting; a nephew, Darrell Anderson of Whiting; and two great nieces, Lisa Fey of Sioux City and Kimberly Riley of Onawa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Van; two sisters, Lucille Hervey and Leona Paine; and two brothers, Joe Anderson and Anton Anderson.

Graveside services were held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, April 23,1999, at the Onawa Cemetery with Pastor Donald R. Ludwick officiating. Mr. Ron Williams, vocalist, sang "How Great Thou Art."

Casket Bearers were Ron Williams, Lloyd Moravek, Gary Sherrill, Bob Burgess, Steve Allen, and Jerry Jirovsky.

Interment was in the Onawa Cemetery with arrangements by the Pearson Funeral Home, Onawa.
