LaBerta L. Hinrichsen, 68, Moorhead, Iowa died Wednesday, August 2, 2000 at her home after a lengthy illness with cancer.
LaBerta was born June 11, 1932, at Moorhead, Iowa, the daughter of Ervin and Alice (Stolley) Crews. She was baptized November 27, 1956, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Ute, Iowa. She attended Spring Valley Country School #5 through the 7th grade and attended 8th grade at the Wax School.
While growing up LaBerta participated in both girls and boys 4-H, showing the Reserved Baby Beef and the Grand Champion Angus in the same year. During high school at Moorhead she participated in the Girls' Glee Club which won a #1 rating at the Onawa Music Contest and a #2 rating at the Storm Lake Contest. She also played basketball in high school. She graduated from Moorhead High School in 1950 and then attended Morningside College, graduating with a degree in elementary education. She taught at Mondamin, Anthon, Council Bluffs and Logan, Iowa.
LaBerta married Earl Hinrichsen, June 30, 1956, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Ute, Iowa. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, taking an active part in the care of her grandchildren. An avid reader, she also loved gardening and found joy in canning and preserving the garden harvest.
She also enjoyed baking and crocheting.
LaBerta became a member of Bethesda Lutheran Church on August 10, 1969. She was a fifty-year member of the Royal Neighbors of America, a 4-H leader, and also belonged to the Jolly Pastime Club, the Loess Hills Hospitality Association, the Moorhead Cultural Center, and served on the Moorhead Centennial Committee and as a board member of the Moorhead Library.
Survivors include her husband, Earl; a son Marvin Hinrichsen of Moorhead; a daughter, Kathi Aubry of Onawa; three grandchildren, Brett Aubry, Holly and Nicholas Hinrichsen of Moorhead; her mother, Alice Crews of Moorhead; an uncle, George Stolley of Idaho and an aunt, Florence Carson of Pisgah, Iowa, as well as many cousins.
LaBerta was preceded in death by her father, Ervin Crews; and a grandson, Alvin Aubry, Jr.
Funeral services were at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 5, 2000 at Bethesda Lutheran Church, Moorhead with Pastor Margo P. Fohs, officiating. The congregation sang "On Eagles Wings" and "He Leadeth Me" and Sam Johnson sang "The Lord's Prayer". Janice Smith was organist. Interment was in Spring Valley Cemetery, Moorhead. Visitation was from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at Rush Family Chapel, Onawa.
Casket bearers were Jerry Pickle, George Moorhead, Steven Houston, Blair Holverson, Keith Hieber and Harley Beall.
Arrangements were under the direction of Rush Family Care Service, Onawa.
