MAPLETON, Iowa — Eula Minnie Gertrude Masters, 95, of Mapleton died Thursday, Nov. 12, 1998 at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton with Pastor Kurt Saboe and her grandson, Dr. Curtis Masters officiating. Burial will be in Center Cemetery at Castana, Iowa. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.

Mrs. Masters was born March 5, 1903 at Conway, Iowa, the daughter of Jesse and Bertha (Shapley) Winternute. She grew up and was educated in Taylor County and graduated from Bedford High School in 1921. She attended Cedar Falls Teachers College and received her teaching certificate in 1925. She moved to Mapleton to teach.

She married Tom R. Masters on June 22, 1929 at Blockton, Iowa. They farmed in the Mapleton, community where she also was a substitute teacher. They retired in 1963 and moved into Mapleton. He died April 6, 1997.

She was a member of the Faith Bible Church in Mapleton as well as a former member of the Castana Thursday Club. She developed a talent for arranging artificial flowers and did this for weddings, graduations and other special occasions.

Survivors include one son and his wife, Dwight and Alice of Mapleton; one daughter and her husband, Kathryn and Raymond Haafke of Bronson, Iowa; one daughter-in-law, Agnes of Maryville, Mo.; two sisters, Angelyn Vanderbur of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Gertrude Livingston of Fort Meyers, Fla.; 14. grandchildren; 24 great-grand-children and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by one son, Phillip; an infant daughter, Elaine; one granddaughter, Judy Bramble; one great-grandson, Christopher Bramble and two brothers, Earl and Charles.
