Honsen Davies, former county auditor, dies
CASTANA, Iowa — Honsen Louise Davies, 90, of Castana, a former Monona County Auditor, died Monday, Aug. 24, 1998, at Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa, Iowa.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m.. Friday at Castana Community Church, with the Rev. Linda Boggs officiating.
Burial will be in Center Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.
Mrs. Davies was born Aug. 27, 1907, in Castana, the daughter of George F. and Belle (Mann) Phillips. She graduated from Castana High School and attended Morningside College Conservatory of Music in Sioux City. She was a piano instructor in Castana; Turin and Onawa, Iowa.
She married Gerald Thomson on Nov. 2, 1928. He died Oct. 20, 1944. She served out his term as Monona County Auditor in 1944, and was the first woman elected to this office in Monona County. She served as auditor until 1951.
She married Evan Davies on Jan. 17, 1949, in Albuquerque, N.M. He died April 16, 1987. She was the piano accompanist for him for many years and other soloist and instrumentalists. She also played for weddings, funerals and as organist in area churches and Onawa Congregational Church.
She was a member of Iowa Federated Women's Club, Ladies Aide and Onawa Business and Professional Women's Club. She was the first woman to serve on the Castana Community School board.
Survivors include a sister, Cathryn P. Caldwell of Glendora, Calif.; a daughter and her husband, Cathryn Olivia and Stanley L. Greigg of Washington D.C.; a son and his wife, Dan T. and Dorothy A. Thomson of Palatine, Ill.; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Memorials in her name may be directed to Castana Community Church.
