Hazel Waples Hawthorn, 104, of Sioux City died Monday, April 20, 1998, at the Countryside Retirement Home in Sioux City.

Services will be at the Grace United Methodist Church, with the Rev. William H. Steward and the Rev. Sheryl K. Ashley officiating. Burial will be at 12:30 p.m. Friday in Center Township Cemetery, near Castana, Iowa. There will be no visitation. Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Hawthorn was born July 21, 1983, in Castana, the daughter of Wm. Henry Jr. and Nora (Livengood) Waples. She graduated from Castana High School and Morningside College. She also studied at Iowa State College and the University of Wisconsin. She taught in public schools in Castana, Sergeant Bluff and Sioux City for many years.

She married Horace B. Hawthorn ,on Sept. 21, 1916, in Castana. The couple lived in Madison, Wis., Ames, Iowa, Akron, Ohio, Castana as well as Sioux City following their teaching careers. He died Feb. 17, 1981, in Sioux City.

She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Rebekah Circle, Goodwill Auxiliary, American Association of University Women, The Retired Teachers, Morningside Garden Club, Castana Thursday Club, Castana American Legion Auxiliary and the Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority.

Survivors include two daughters, Miriam Baker Nye of Moville, Iowa and Clarice Watson of Eugene, Ore.; a son and his wife, Duane and Charlotte Hawthorn of Sioux City; a brother, Eldon Waples of Castana; six grandchildren; and two great-
grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Violet and Beulah Waples; a brother, Clair Waples; two grand-daughters, Barbara and Paulette Hawthorn; and a son-in-law, Dr. John A. Nye.
