CASTANA, Iowa — Samuel Richard Hall, 89, of Castana died Friday, July 31, 1998, at the Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa, Iowa.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Castana Community Church, with the Rev. Linda Boggs officiating. Burial will be in Center Cemetery. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton, Iowa.

Mr. Hall was born Sept. 6, 1908, in Ticonic, Iowa, the son of Richard and Hannah (Shellenberger) Hall. He lived in Monona County, Iowa, his entire life, except when harvesting grain in South Dakota. He then farmed for the Beatons.

He married Angeline Mary Manson on Oct. 29, 1929, in Elk Point, S.D. The couple lived on the Beaton farm until moving to Castana. He was employed part time in constructing steel storage bins and wood carpentry jobs. They lived in Whiting (Iowa) Pleasant View Care Center from 1993 to 1997, when they moved to Maple Heights Nursing Home in Mapleton, Iowa.

He was a member of Castana Community Church, Castana Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodge and the Masons. He also served on the Castana School Board.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter and her husband, Jo and Bob Yeates of West Des Moines; three grandchildren, Randy and Ric Yeates and Mary Ann Green; four great-grandchildren; a brother, James of Texas; three sisters, Nellie and her husband, Ken Rodgers of Onawa, Betty and her husband, Bob Georgius of Denison, Iowa, and Jane Fields of Council Bluffs, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two daughters, Cathryn and Baby Hill; four sisters, Anna, Doris, Eileen and Margaret; and four brothers, Bill, Bud, Glenn and Richard Jr.
