CASTANA, Iowa — Samuel Eugene Mann, 73, died Thursday, Jan. 21, 1999, at his home at West Okoboji, Iowa.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Castana Community United Church of Christ in Castana with the Rev. Bob Fritzmeier officiating. Burial will be in the Center Cemetery in rural Castana, with military honors provided by the American Legion Grimsley-Thayer Post 502 of Castana. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton, Iowa.
Mr. Mann was born on Dec. 8, 1925, near Castana, the son of Floyd and Rose (Nikolaisen) Mann.
During the Korean War, he served in the U.S. Army as a surveyor in Panama. He farmed and was part owner of the Castana Elevator until his retirement.
He was a member of the Castana Community United Church of Christ. He was recognized by Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad for his many years of volunteer work in recruiting and coaching youth in baseball. He was known for his woodworking skills.
Survivors include one sister, Virgina M. Gladney and her husband, Charles, of Pasadena, Calif.; an aunt, Margaret Nikolaisen of Mapleton, Iowa; his best friend, Sally Simpson, of Castana, and many
cousins.
