Death Summons Oscar Melby

Oscar Melby passed away in a Sioux City hospital Saturday, Feb 4th at the age of 70 years. He had been ill for several months.

Mr. Melby was another of our old-timers, having been born near Moorhead and lived in this area all of his life. He was a prosperous, hard working farmer and followed this work until he moved to Soldier several years back. Oscar had been a member of Soldier Lutheran Church all his life and served on several church boards.

Funeral services were held from the Soldier Lutheran (south) Church Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 2:00 p. m., with Pastor John C. Kilde giving the sermon. Burial was in the Soldier Valley Cemetery under the direction of Oldham Funeral Home.

Oscar Melby, son of Chris and Carrie Melby, was born April 19, 1885 near Moorhead, Iowa. He passed away at a Sioux City hospital Feb 4th at the age of 70 years.

He was baptized and confirmed in the Soldier Lutheran Church.

On November 16, 1910 he was united in marriage to Christine Lundberg. To this union nine children were born. Mrs. Melby and one daughter, Olga, preceded him in death.

He is survived by seven sons: Raymond and Wilbur of Soldier, Earl and Robert of Moorhead, Clark of Dunlap, Norman of Woodbine, Harry of Roselle, N. J.; one daughter, Ella (Mrs. Harry Schlensig), of Soldier; 12 grandchildren, one great grandchild; two brothers: Adolph of Moorhead and Johnny of Soldier; two sisters: Nettie (Mrs. Oscar Wingate) and Mrs. Anna Evenson, of Soldler.
