1952 Mapleton graduate remembered

Robert E."Bob "Meinhardt, of Jacksonville, Ore., formerly of Mapleton, passed away Sunday, May 6, 2007, at his home in Jacksonville after a long battle with lung cancer.

Memorial services were May 20 at First United Methodist Church in Medford, Ore.

Bob was born in Sioux City, Iowa, in 1934 to Erma and Elwood Meinhardt. He attended high school in Mapleton, where he played football and basketball, graduating in 1952. Bob attended Morningside College in Sioux City, where he continued to play football and was a member of the 1954 conference championship team.

On Aug. 14, 1955, Bob married Masel "Mimi" Martin, his high school sweetheart.

Bob graduated from Morningside in 1956 with a Bachelor of Science degree. Upon graduation, he began teaching and coaching sports in Kingsley, Iowa. He was soon drafted into the Army and spent two years serving in Germany. After his Army service he returned to Kingsley to his former positions.

In 1964, he moved his family to Ellensburg, Wash., and a year later received a Masters of Education degree from Central Washington State College. In the fall of 1965, he took a position as audiovisual director at Bemidji State College in Bemidji, Minn. Nine months later, the family relocated to the Pacific Northwest where Bob became director of the Instructional Media Center of the Jackson County Intermediate Education Service District in Medford. He served in this capacity for 30 years until his retirement in 1996. During this time he was the first president of the newly organized Oregon Educational Media Association (OEMA) and at the national level he served for some years as coordinator of the Region 9 Association for Educational and Communication Technology (AECT).

Bob was an avid golfer, loved to read, solve crossroad puzzles and was an Oregon Duck fan.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Mimi; two daughters, Robin Dunbar of Yountville, Calif., and Lori Fredericks of Sunnyvale, Calif.; two grandsons, Cole and Lee; and his sister, Norma Meinhardt of Klamath Falls, Ore.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father.
