MAPLETON, Iowa — Ed Meier, 92, of Mapleton died unexpectedly Saturday, Aug. 13, 2005, at his residence.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Mapleton, with Monsignor Mark Duchaine officiating. Burial will be in Danbury Catholic Cemetery, Danbury, Iowa. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a vigil wake service at 7 p.m., at Armstrong Funeral Home in Mapleton.

Edward Joseph Meier was born Oct. 26, 1912, in Danbury, the son of Ben and Julia (Rosauer) Meier. He grew up, educated and farmed in the Danbury area.

On April 21, 1941, he married Delphine Helena Nielsen in Danbury. In 1974, they retired and moved to Mapleton. He continued to help with the farm work on the Bud Patterson and Leo Uhl farms. Delphine died March 12, 1988.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. His favorite pastimes were listening to polka music and driving his car. He always was ready with a pocketful of candy for his grandchildren and a root beer for the great-grandkids.

Those left to cherish their memories of him include a daughter and her husband, Roxanne and Ronald Engelke of Mapleton; a daughter-in-law, Rhonda Williams of Dewitt, Iowa; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law and her husband, DeVilda and Jim Collins of Danbury; and other relatives and many friends.

Along with his wife, he was also preceded in death by his parents, a son, Kurt; two brothers; and two sisters.
